What is badminton?
Badminton is a fast indoor racket sport played over a high net with a shuttlecock rather than a ball. Courts sit inside a sports hall almost without exception, because even a slight draught moves the shuttle off line. That also means the season barely applies: a court in January is as bookable as one in June. An hour is priced per court, and the same court serves both singles and doubles. Browse the badminton venues below to compare halls, court prices and free hours.
- Courts are indoors and out of the wind, so what is free in January looks much the same as in June.
- You pay for the court, not per player. One against one or two against two costs the same.
- Singles and doubles share a court but use different lines: the narrow sidelines for singles, the wide ones for doubles.
- Nylon shuttles last and are what most casual play uses. Feather shuttles fly faster and truer, but they break easily and cost more per tube.
- Non-marking indoor shoes are required in most halls. Running shoes with dark soles can get you turned away at the door.
- Rackets are usually available to rent and shuttles are sold at reception, so a first game needs nothing but the right shoes.
